How to Care for Your Weave
Here are some general guidelines to follow when maintaining your weave or sew in hair extensions at home. If your stylist has given you specific instructions, be sure to follow them. Proper care at home and in between appointments will reduce the risk of damage to your hair and allow for maximum hair growth.
Do
- Gently detangle the hair before applying any water on the weave
- Use a heat protector when heat styling
- Tie your weave with a silk scarf when you sleep to help keep the hair from tangling or coming loose
- Apply a deep conditioning treatment every 4 weeks
- Make sure the cornrows under the weave are completely dry after you have shampooed your weave as this may cause your own hair to tangle and get matted
- If you color your hair, apply conditioner and leave on for 30-45 minutes to restore the hair’s natural silky texture
Don’t
- Do not shampoo your weave too frequently as this will cause the hair to dry out
- When heat styling, make sure the tools you are using are not too hot as this will cause damage to the hair
- Don’t color the hair too frequently
- Don’t wear your weave for longer than 8 weeks, as this will cause damage to your own hair and, in particular, the hair line.
